Direct quotes:
"The island's owner, called a Shimaosa, served as village headman."

"The hierarchy is divided as follows:
Cerulean (the king)
Celeste (the nobility)
Nephrite (magicians, priests, and doctors)
Thorn (merchants)
Flax (farmers and manufacturers)
Raven (mercenaries)
Chroma (all-purpose hired workers)
Beryl (thieves and criminals)
In this ranking, Chromas are second from the bottom."

Plot summary by me (thank u LJRP history sections):
Ash was raised an only child on a small island with his mother and father. He looked up to and admired his father, who was a renowned Chroma. Chromas were people who were born with unique abilities, often using them to do dangerous tasks that normal people wouldn't be able to handle. However, his father did not approve of this admiration and explained to Ash that everyone hated and feared Chromas because of their unnatural powers. The day after he explained this, Ash's father left to complete a job and never returned. It was later found out that his ship had been sunk by a storm, ending his life.

Everything quickly went downhill from there. Because the island had lost their most reliable Chroma, they began to hate Ash and his mother fiercely. Hoping to satisfy the villagers and keep food on the table, Ash's mother set off on a job as well (being a Chroma herself) with promises of showing him her power if he waited for her. She, too, never returned, having been eaten by a dragon.

And so, at five years old, Ash lost his entire family. He was taken in and "employed" by a boar family on the island, forced to work for next to nothing for seven years. Finally, at the age of twelve he developed his own power—the same as his father's, named Eccarlate—and decided that he'd had enough of being mistreated and abused. He escaped by literally punching a hole through the wall of his house, stole a boat, and sailed off into the sunset to find a new life for himself.

At first, no one would hire him because he was 1) twelve, and 2) a completely unknown Chroma that no one had ever heard of (plus he stole a boat, that probably didn't help his resume). However, Ash took any job that was offered to him, no matter how dangerous or poorly paid. Over time he became known in his area as a cheap, reliable Chroma. He trained himself in an assortment of weapons and adapted to his new reckless lifestyle, managing to make just enough to get by for three years by himself.

One day, he took on a particularly dangerous job and soon found himself exhausted, outnumbered by monsters, and completely alone. Just when he was about to give up, a pair of Chromas showed up and saved him. At first he believed they were after the large reward for the job, but the Chromas, Jasmine and Haze, explained to him that they just wanted to help him out, and even invited him to join them. Ash initially refused, but they were persistent, and so after some more convincing he finally agreed to stay with them. Jasmine and Haze treated him like family. Ash was introduced to their young daughter, Marona, who warmed up to him immediately. For three more years, he stayed with Jasmine, Haze and Marona, helping out with jobs and generally being happy for once in his life. He also developed a bit of a crush on Jasmine, which... didn't go anywhere, thank god.

It was Haze's dream to one day buy an island and settle down, retiring their group as Chromas so they wouldn't have to risk their lives on the job anymore. However, they were barely making enough between the three of them, so it would be years before they could afford an island of their own. One day, Haze catches wind of a huge job: people were vanishing on the Island of Evil, the place where the powerful demon Sulphur was defeated years ago. Everyone else who took the job never returned, but because of the danger, the reward was enormous. Ash and Jasmine didn't like the sound of it, but Haze managed to convince them. And so, the trio headed off to the Island of Evil...

When they got there, all seemed quiet until they reach the centre of the island. Hordes of strange monsters appeared and attacked them. Their numbers seemed endless, and the only option left was to retreat. Just when their boat was in sight, a huge Wraith appeared and blocked their path. Bravely, Ash tried to hold it off on his own, but before his friends even got a chance to run they were all hit by a blast of energy. Ash collapsed—deaf, blind and weak, but still alive as the creatures devoured him. His last memories were of Haze shouting, trying to use his healing powers one last time.

When Ash came to, the monsters had already moved on and the island was back to being deathly silent. Also, he was dead. After some investigation, Ash concluded that Haze must have tried to save him, but couldn't heal his body. Instead, his soul remained stuck in limbo as a phantom. Neither Haze nor Jasmine joined him in this state, and the sight of their corpses proved to him they were very much dead. He was the only "survivor" of the attack.

With nothing else to do with himself, Ash set off to find Marona back home, hoping that maybe he could do something to help her or watch over her as repayment to his dear friend. After months of just getting there, he discovered that Marona was shipped off to an orphanage as soon as they headed for the Island of Evil—her caretakers didn't even wait for Jasmine and Haze to be confirmed missing. Ash haunted their house for awhile, frustrated that he couldn't punch them in the face or do anything more than be a mildly annoying poltergeist. Eventually he got sick of feeling useless and decided to just go and look for her, no matter how long it took. More months pass. Finally, he found Marona almost a year later at a very abusive orphanage, because all of Ivoire's orphanages double as sweatshops or something.

Ash watched over her, unable to protect her or even speak to her, but lacking any other reason to exist. Six years later, Marona had turned eleven. Because this story hasn't been awful enough to children yet, the orphanage was attacked by pirates. Ash was forced to watch helplessly as the island was raided. However, on that very same day Marona also gained her own Chroma ability: Chartreuse Gale. Her ability not only allowed her to see and hear phantoms like Ash, but also allowed her to give them a temporary physical form. Together, Ash and Marona fought off the pirates and saved the day.

Even though they were the saviors of the orphanage, the villagers and other orphans were terrified of Marona's new powers. They called her possessed and chased her off the island. Despite this, Marona was overjoyed to be reunited with Ash. The two of them started to work together as Chromas, just like her parents had. After about another year or two they'd made enough to start renting a small island fittingly named Phantom Isle. Though Marona's growing reputation as The Possessed One continued to spread, she and Ash worked hard to help the people of Ivoire and make ends meet.

Everything after chapter 7 (lead up to pirate attack) is a summary of a summary so take w\ a grain of salt, I'm not confident in the finer details there.
