This crime... is. technically. not his entire fault (it's absolutely his fault). The felled trees, cleanly cut with visible traces of Ain's magic, are not his fault. He did (not) do this. Legally, he cannot be held accountable for his actions. There is justifiable reason for them which means in a court of law he has a case for his innocence.

And also he maybe kindof got a little bit jealous because he overheard one of them saying they were on a pilgrimage or something, and if Ishmael won't answer him then she answers nobody.
